Thinking About an Electric Van? Here’s What You Need to Know

The move toward greener transport is picking up pace—and electric vans are becoming a smart option for more and more businesses. But what’s it actually like to run one?

Whether you’re brand new to electric vehicles (EVs) or just weighing up your options, this guide will walk you through the essentials—from range and charging to running costs and government incentives.

How Far Can an Electric Van Travel?

One of the biggest questions is: how far can I go on a single charge?

Most electric vans now offer a quoted range of over 100 miles. That’s enough for city driving, deliveries, and short routes—but currently still behind what you'd get from a full tank of diesel.

Bear in mind: Cold weather, air conditioning, and heavy loads can reduce your range. EVs are ideal for businesses that operate locally and have predictable daily mileage.

If you're city-based, electric vans are a great option. With growing access to local charging points, fewer emissions, and no Clean Air Zone (CAZ) charges, they make everyday driving simpler and cheaper.

Charging Your Electric Van: What You Need to Know

Charging your van is straightforward—once you know the options. There are three main types:

Rapid Charging

  • Best for: Motorways and quick top-ups
  • Speed: Up to 80% charge in ~30 minutes
  • Power: Typically 50kW or more

Fast Charging

  • Best for: Shopping centres, car parks, workplaces
  • Speed: Full charge in 1–6 hours
  • Power: Between 7kW and 22kW

Slow Charging (Wall Box)

  • Best for: Overnight charging at home or the depot
  • Speed: Full charge overnight
  • Power: 3kW–7kW

Tip: Your charge time depends on the charger, your battery size, and your van’s max charge rate. See our guide to EV Batteries here

Are Electric Vans Cheaper to Run?

Electric vans do cost more upfront—but the running costs are where you start to see the savings:

  • No fuel bills – 100 miles in a diesel van costs ~£14; an EV can do the same for <£10
  • Lower maintenance – No oil changes, fewer moving parts, and no clutch or gearbox
  • Less brake wear – Thanks to regenerative braking
  • Long battery warranties – Most manufacturers cover batteries for 8 years+

And with many energy suppliers now offering EV-specific tariffs, home charging gets even more affordable.

What’s it Like to Drive an Electric Van?

Driving an electric van is smooth, quiet, and surprisingly fun:

  • Near-silent – Say goodbye to engine noise
  • Instant torque – Power is delivered immediately when you accelerate
  • Effortless to drive – Most EVs are automatic with a responsive, relaxed feel

Different makes and models offer different driving experiences—so it's worth test driving a few to find the right fit.

What Government Support Is Available?

To help businesses go electric, the government offers a Plug-in Van Grant (PIVG):

  • Up to 20% off the cost of a new electric van
  • Maximum discount: £5,000
  • Some plug-in hybrids also qualify

These grants help make EVs far more competitive on price—and easier to access for businesses of all sizes.
